Vancouver
Island Wineries. Southern Vancouver Island is the second largest wine region
in British Columbia. The majority of Vancouver Island's wineries are located
in the Cowichan Valley, 35 minutes north of Victoria.
The vineyards located here enjoy a unique location with ideal growing conditions on southern, sun-drenched slopes.
Wineries on the Tour:
Cherry Point Vineyards was one of the first vineyards on Vancouver Island, as well as one of the first licensed wineries. Cherry Point offers white and red blends, as well as ten main varieties and eight limited varieties, including Agria, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Nine of the twelve wines produced by Cherry Point Vineyards have received recognition at the national and international levels, including eleven awards at the 2006 All Canadian Wine Championships and the 2006 Northwest Wine Summit.
Silverside Farm is a unique winery producing Raspberry, Blueberry & Blackberry wines. Our tasting room is also an art gallery featuring work by local artist Jean Aten as well as gifts made by local craftspeople.
When Joe Busnardo retired from his winery in the Okanagan he relocated to Vancouver Island and started a new winery in Cobble Hill.
Our whites here are Bacchus, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Our reds are Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir and Maréchal Foch. We grow our wines using natural methods to fertilize, plus no pesticides or herbicides. Our wine-making too, uses the most natural, non-interventionist methods possible.
In wine making, we follow the traditions of the countries of origin for each particular grape variety. Come and taste European style wines: our Chardonnay, a Beaujolais Blanc style white wine, fruity and without a taste of oak; or the noble Gamay Reserve, a true Beaujolais Rouge style red wine. Also, try our white Alsace and German style wines: Pinot Gris and Kerner; and last but not least our red party wine, the low priced Gamay Select, crisp and fruity as no other red wine.
Vigneti Zanatta is owned and operated by Loretta Zanatta and family. The 120 acre farm was originally the site of a dairy farm when the Zanatta’s purchased it in 1958. Since then 30 acres have been planted in vines, including Ortega, Cayuga, Auxerrois, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero, Muscat and Madeleine X Sylvaner. The remainder of the farm is in pasture, hay fields, forest and old fruit orchards.
Technically, Merridale is a cidery, not a winery. Merridale specializes in cider made from 100% undiluted, fresh pressed apple juice. Ranging from the award-winning Scrumpy, which appeals to Scotch drinkers, to Merri Berri, reminiscent of a spritzer, Merridale produces a wide range of ciders from apples grown in the Merridale orchards.
